WASTE not, WANT less.

Lise Abraham

You have probably been reading in the press about the waste that the fashion industry is producing.

“The facts are brutal: textile production contributes more to climate change than shipping and aviation combined.”

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-7498031/Dame-Vivienne-Westwood-says-cut-collections-half-forgo-jeans-new-denim.html

In the U.K., a million tons of clothing are sent to landfill every year! New online services such as https://www.girlmeetsdress.com and https://www.nothingnew2wear.com are springing up to fill a need for the latest designer rental revolution.

Designer Roland Mouret says, “Clothes hangers are the plastic straws of the fashion industry. ”So together with Netherlands based Arch & Hook https://archandhook.com/blue/, they have designed a clothes hanger named “Blue.”

Interior Designers are also coming up with ways to reduce waste.

@ulloo42.com we started with the idea of reusing existing furniture as a way of sustainably repurposing and up-cycling to give items a new life.

In Suzanne’s workshop, nothing goes to waste; magazines are cut up and used for collage art, fabric scraps make tote bags and jewelry pouches.

Have fun by wasting less and looking to what you already have. Be creative!.

We can all do our bit, however small it seems.

In the Pink

Lise Abraham

I love the color pink!  I used to have a pink velvet sofa in my house.

When I sold the house a few years ago the new owner ( a woman) insisted on buying the couch along with everything else in the house - a testament to Suzanne’s and my complete remodel and interior designing of this our first house project together.

I recently came across an article in the Financial Times Magazine “How to Spend it” profiling the famous Argyle Pink Diamonds. These gorgeous gems come in all hues of pinks to purples and are  much rarer than white diamonds and more beautiful I think. https://howtospendit.ft.com/watches-jewellery/206977-the-last-of-the-argyle-pink-diamonds

In color psychology, pink is a sign of hope. It is a positive color inspiring warm and comforting feelings, a sense that everything will be okay.

One of my favorite chairs in our Ulloo 42 range of furniture is the Pink Goddess Chair.; Carved goddess and lions heads adorn the arms and hot pink and green fabric completes this statement piece..

My other favorite pink/pastel stunner in our range is the Marie Antoinette Sofa. Hand dyed and frayed edges on the fabric make this large and regal confection rebellious and regal at the same time. Dimensions and details of both these and other items of unique one of a kind pieces of furniture on our website Ulloo42.com. We would love your feedback, please let us know how you are enjoying these Blogs and the inventory.

Is there a crossover between Fashion and Interior Design?

Lise Abraham

The answer is YES! http://coshamie.com/fashion-and-interiors/

One of the trends for fall 2019/2020 is Patchwork.

Patchy Patchwork

There is something comforting about patchwork designs. They might be a little tough to wear, since they can appear raggedy or old-fashioned, but they bring to mind comforting thoughts about lovingly crafted throw blankets somehow combined with a punk rock aesthetic. With meditations on what it means to reuse and up-cycle as well as on intersections of identities, it was no surprise to see patchworks as part of the fall 2019 runway trends.

Ulloo 42 has its own 2019/20 trend for Patchwork. Check out these two beautiful chairs imaginatively reworked by Suzanne in her own unique way. The fabrics were hand dyed by Suzanne and the frayed edges are a very creative detail giving the chairs a “funky” vibe.

We love the creativity crossover of fashion and interiors, stay tuned for more inspirations.

When does your sofa become a platform for exercise?

Lise Abraham

Have you heard about the new wellness trend of sitting as low to the floor as possible, so it forces you to exercise your legs getting in and out of it? Click here for the full article!

Now, while we don’t want to go all the way with furniture free living, take a look at our Tush Cush Sofa, basically a bunch of big cushions attached to form this incredible low fun seating. How Bohemian and 1960’s! The great thing is that this sofa can be reproduced by us in different SUZANNE CURRIE fabrics and made to fit your room size.

Team it with a low coffee table like our pink ice plank table, just the right shade of pink with cool orange legs.

HAVE FUN EXERCISING AT HOME ON YOUR LOW FURNITURE!

Where does the inspiration come from?

Lise Abraham

We all need inspiration in our lives, for a creative person it is a MUST! Both Suzanne and I LOVE fashion with a passion, we look at magazines, watch on line couture fashion shows (one day maybe we will get to see the real thing) go to art exhibitions, museums, travel, enjoy the natural world and all that nature has to offer, people watch, stare out to space, watch movies; there is inspiration all around us.

Suzanne’s collage work in process with paper from magazines.

Suzanne started coveting fashion magazines at an early age, Vogue was a favorite, she saved all her magazines and eventually when her art took her in the direction of collage work, the magazines that were stacked up in piles became her inspiration to use in her art. Shapes and colors from those magazines form the basis of Suzanne’s unique collage work.

For me photography is a passion and an inspiration, as I am constantly traveling I come across inspirational images all the time. I send my photos to Suzanne when I see something that inspires me and so we are constantly sharing ideas with each other.

One of my design hero’s is Manolo Blahnik. I started buying his shoes in the 1970’s when he had a small shop just off the Kings Road in London. One of Manolo’s inspirations for his beautiful shoes is the Wallace Collection in London. A former private residence it is full of gorgeous paintings, sculptures, furniture and more. Manolo has spent many hours absorbing the beauty of this place and has recently collaborated with the museum in showing some of his shoes that were inspired by the paintings: “An Enquiring Mind: Manolo Blahnik at the Wallace Collection” I highly recommend anyone visiting London to visit this small museum.

Below is some recent inspirations from my travels, this incredible blue is my favorite color at the moment.

Let's talk about blue chairs for Summer and the trend for curves in sofas!

Michelle Luna

The color blue evokes feelings of summer, the blue sky, the sea, so why not chairs?

Blue is a calming natural color a universal favorite of men, women and businesses. Blue is perceived to be friendly, authoritative, peaceful and trustworthy. On our journey of re-imagining furniture a few of our chairs ended up transforming into Blue. Check out “Oscar” the chair, who doubles as a pet and somewhere to sit. Shaggy blue faux fur envelopes this little gem and blue powder coated legs finish off the look.

Alternatively, our Aqua Blue Velvet chair is calmly elegant with silver painted legs, this chair brings a fifties “boudoir” feel to a bedroom or can be an accent chair almost anywhere!

Soft rounded shapes are appearing everywhere from Sofa’s and armchairs to mirrors and lamps.  Pieces with more of an organic feel are on the radar for designers and consumers. These soft lines give you a hug every time you sit down.

In our collection we have a few such huggable “sit, lounge, lie down” pieces. Our Pop Art Sofa and the Viking Chair – all available on our website Ulloo42.com.

Happy Summer!

African Fabrics are trending in all sorts of ways!

Lise Abraham

On the runways and in interior design, African fabrics are hip vibrant, colorful and fun!

One of the first chairs to get the Ulloo 42 makeover was our Beau Peep chair. When Suzanne came across this chair it was in a drab brown fabric but the scale of the chair, low to the ground, high in the back and big enough to seat two was just the kind of thing that appealed to our unconventional aesthetic. What better than to reimagine this chair in a bold bright blue and pink African Fabric. This chair was a favorite at our launch party in January 2018.

How we came to be known as Ulloo 42

Lise Abraham

When Suzanne and I were trying to come up with a name for our company we wanted it to reflect our unconventional approach to conventional furniture. We wanted it to say something about the home or house and to represent our global upbringing. As Suzanne spent her early years growing up in South Africa I started by looking at translations of house in several African languages. I came across ULO, which in IGBO African means house or home.

We both liked the word but were not crazy with the way it looked on paper. Suzanne being a very visual person then played around with the word and came up with ULLOO which we both loved for its meaning and symmetry.

The number 42 came about because we felt a number after a name sounds catchier. 42 also happens to be from The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy. The number 42 represents an asterisk * which is a symbol meaning any formula can be entered, therefore in the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy the computer was asked the meaning of life and it came up with 42, meaning it can be anything you want it to be – And so Ulloo 42 was born!

How Suzanne's artwork became the canvas for Ulloo 42 designs

Lise Abraham

Suzanne’s collage art is colorful and playful, lots of shapes meander over the canvas, the result of paper from magazines cut into shapes. Paint and resin finish the look. Suzanne has been painting practically all of her life, the collage art started about ten years ago and is her signature.

About a year ago we started to experiment with sections of the art putting it onto fabrics, wallpaper, key rings, jewelry, and more. We soon had a range of items stemming from the original art.

When we exhibited at the Las Vegas Design show last August these items were a great success, we were very excited when the Guggenheim Museum in New York placed an order for our earrings.

An accent wall is a great way to experiment with color and pattern. Suzanne and I have used our Ulloo 42 wallpaper, the design of which is taken from Suzanne’s original art, and applied it in a powder room, hallway and behind the bed to great effect. It does not overwhelm but, enhance and gives interest to a monochrome room.

Wallpaper can transform a room in many ways. According to a blog by Houzz, the right design can both alter a sense of spaciousness and illumination to a space.

2. ART - THE HOME GALLERY

What hangs on your walls is just as important as the color you paint them. Art can transform a room and make it feel warm and cozy.

Suzanne’s original collage art brings color and happiness to any area of the home or work place. Place them in unexpected areas like a bathroom! No worries about the steam, the resin that is used on our artworks is extremely durable.

This Houzz blog states that art can add movement, provide texture and make a statement (big or small) to any space.
